When you soundproof a room, the aim is to reduce unwanted sound entering or leaving the space. The most effective solution depends on whether the problem is voices and television, footsteps and vibration, low-frequency bass, or echo within the room itself.

How soundproofing works
Most successful systems combine several principles: mass to resist airborne sound, cavity absorption to reduce resonance, decoupling to interrupt vibration paths and airtightness to close weak gaps.

Wall soundproofing
For voices, TV and music through a party wall, a stronger upgrade may combine Rockwool RWA45 acoustic mineral wool, a resilient system such as GenieClip RST with furring channel, and dense lining layers.
Our SPK15 Sand Board is a high-density 15mm board that can add useful mass in suitable wall, floor and ceiling constructions. Gyproc SoundBloc is another common acoustic lining board.

Adding mass with membranes
Flexible high-mass layers are useful where extra density is needed without a very thick board. Options include Mass Loaded Vinyl, TECSOUND 50 and TECSOUND SY100. Browse the full acoustic membrane and MLV collection.
Membranes work best as part of a complete construction. They are not substitutes for cavity treatment, board mass, isolation or proper perimeter sealing.
Floor soundproofing
Floors often need to address both airborne and impact sound. If footsteps, chair movement or dropped objects are the main issue, reducing the impact at the floor above is normally preferable where access allows.

Ceiling soundproofing
Noise from above can involve both voices and structural impact. A high-performance ceiling may use acoustic mineral wool between joists, isolation clips and channels below, then dense board layers and flexible perimeter sealing.

Do acoustic panels and curtains soundproof a room?
Acoustic panels and curtains mainly reduce reflections inside the room. They can make studios, offices and cinemas sound much better, but they should not be confused with a structural soundproofing wall.

Do not ignore acoustic sealing
A wall or ceiling can contain excellent products but still perform poorly if gaps are left around the perimeter or services. Use the sealant specified for the build-up, such as AC50 Acoustic Sealant, and deal with penetrations before closing the final layer.

- Identify airborne, impact and low-frequency noise separately.
- Check whether the noise is travelling directly or flanking around the surface.
- Measure the room and available build-up depth.
- Decide whether you can treat the source side.
- Check fire, thermal and Building Regulations requirements.
- Use manufacturer spacing, fixing and load guidance for clip systems.
