If noise is coming through a party wall or internal wall, start with two questions: what is the wall made from and what can you hear? That quickly narrows down the right soundproofing route.

Choose the Right Starting Point

Solid / Masonry Wall

Usually focus on adding mass, reducing rigid vibration paths where needed and sealing the perimeter carefully.

Stud Wall

If the cavity is accessible, acoustic mineral wool can help control resonance before dense lining layers are added.

Heavy Bass / Vibration

Low-frequency and structural noise usually benefits from a more isolated build-up rather than simply adding one extra board.

What a Wall System Usually Needs

  • Mass: acoustic plasterboard, dense soundproofing boards or acoustic membranes.
  • Isolation: resilient bars or acoustic clip-and-channel systems where greater separation is required.
  • Cavity absorption: acoustic mineral wool in stud or framed cavities.
  • Sealing: acoustic sealant and careful detailing around edges, sockets and penetrations.

A thin direct system can suit moderate airborne noise where room depth is limited. Stronger neighbour noise, music, bass or vibration may justify a deeper isolated system. There is usually a trade-off between lost room depth and acoustic performance.

Before You Order

Check the full wall, including sockets, skirting gaps, pipe penetrations, chimney breasts and adjoining floor or ceiling junctions. Sound can travel around an upgraded wall through these flanking paths, so treating only one small patch can give disappointing results.
