Concrete and masonry walls already have substantial mass, but that does not mean they are immune to noise problems. Voices, television and music may still pass through a wall, while bass and vibration can travel through connected floors, ceilings and side walls.
For a serious retrofit, the best approach is usually not to stick foam or absorptive panels directly to the concrete. Instead, improve the whole wall system: seal weak points, create separation where practical, add cavity absorption and increase lining mass.
First identify how the noise is travelling
Before adding materials, listen around the wall perimeter, sockets, chimney breasts, floor junctions and ceiling line. If the noise is strongest at the edges rather than through the middle of the wall, you may be dealing with flanking noise.
Also distinguish airborne noise from impact and structure-borne noise. A wall lining can help with airborne sound, but structural vibration may need treatment elsewhere in the building.
Method 1: independent or decoupled wall lining
Creating a new lining with reduced rigid contact to the existing masonry is one of the strongest practical upgrades. Depending on the available depth and specification, this can be achieved with independent framing or an acoustic clip-and-channel system.

Decoupling only works if the new lining is not accidentally bridged back to the wall with inappropriate fixings, services or rigid perimeter contact.
Method 2: fill the cavity with acoustic mineral wool
An empty cavity can resonate. Filling the void with an appropriate acoustic mineral wool helps control sound energy inside the construction. Suitable options include Rockwool RWA45, Rockwool RW3, Knauf APR and ISOVER APR.
Choose the thickness to suit the actual cavity rather than compressing a thicker product into a smaller space.
Method 3: add lining mass
The new lining normally needs dense board layers to resist airborne sound transmission. Products such as Gyproc SoundBloc and SPK15 Sand Board can add mass within a suitable wall build-up.
Where the design calls for a flexible dense layer, consider Mass Loaded Vinyl or TECSOUND SY100. A membrane is an additional mass layer, not a replacement for proper framing, cavity treatment and sealing.
Method 4: seal every practical weak point
Use a suitable flexible acoustic sealant such as AC50 at specified perimeter joints and penetrations. Sockets, pipework, wall edges and gaps can undermine a much more expensive wall build-up if left untreated.
What about acoustic panels?
Products such as Quietstone Acoustic Panels are useful for reducing reflections and reverberation inside a room, but they are not a substitute for a sound-insulating wall lining. This distinction matters: absorption improves the room sound; isolation reduces transmission through the building.

A practical concrete-wall build-up
There is no universal specification, but a high-performance retrofit often follows this logic:
- inspect and seal obvious defects in the existing wall;
- create an independent or resiliently mounted lining;
- fit suitable acoustic mineral wool in the cavity;
- add one or more dense lining layers as specified;
- stagger joints where the system requires it;
- seal perimeters and penetrations carefully;
- avoid rigid bridges back to the existing masonry.
The exact clip spacing, stud size, board combination and fixing arrangement must follow the chosen system and structural requirements.
Common mistakes
- Sticking acoustic foam to the wall and expecting neighbour noise to disappear.
- Building a new stud wall rigidly against the concrete and losing much of the benefit of separation.
- Leaving the cavity empty.
- Adding only one thin board layer where greater mass is required.
- Failing to seal sockets and perimeter joints.
- Ignoring flanking noise through floors, ceilings and adjoining walls.
- Quoting a guaranteed dB improvement without a tested complete assembly and site conditions.
