Underfloor heating works best when the floor construction limits unnecessary heat loss below the heating layer. The correct insulation can improve warm-up response and help more of the system's output reach the room above.
The right board depends on the heating system, substrate, finished floor, available build-up depth and the manufacturer's installation detail. There is no single thickness that suits every project.
Why insulation matters beneath underfloor heating
Without adequate insulation, part of the heat produced by the system can travel down into the slab, void or structure below. A properly specified insulation layer reduces that downward heat flow and helps the floor respond more efficiently.
What type of insulation board should you use?
Some low-profile electric and wet systems use dedicated tile backer or overlay boards. Other floor constructions may incorporate PIR insulation as part of the wider thermal build-up. Always confirm compatibility with the heating-system manufacturer before substituting a general building insulation board for a dedicated system component.

Board thickness and floor height
More insulation generally improves thermal resistance, but floor height can limit what is practical in a retrofit. Door clearances, thresholds, skirting, stairs and adjacent rooms all need to be considered before increasing the build-up.
Rather than choosing 6mm, 10mm or 20mm from a generic recommendation, work from the complete system specification and required thermal performance.
Tiled floors
Tiled floors need a stable substrate and compatible adhesive or levelling system. Where a specialist tile backer or insulation board is required, follow the heating and flooring manufacturers' instructions for priming, bonding, fixing and joint reinforcement.
Timber, laminate and floating floors
Floor coverings also affect heat transfer. Confirm the maximum floor temperature and thermal resistance permitted by the flooring manufacturer, especially with engineered wood, laminate and carpet systems.
Moisture and subfloor preparation
The subfloor should be suitable for the insulation and heating system: stable, correctly prepared and within the required moisture tolerances. Concrete floors may also need a damp-proof or vapour-control detail as part of the complete construction.

- Ignoring compressive strength and floor loading.
- Leaving gaps that create thermal bridges.
